Please note we will have TWO POSTINGS up at the same time – one for Concord only and one Statewide.   Applicants can apply to both application processes but will only be required to complete each process step once.

ALE is a division of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. Alcohol Law Enforcement Special Agents have statewide jurisdiction to investigate any criminal offense and make arrests within the State of North Carolina. ALE is the lead enforcement agency for the state’s alcoholic beverage control, lottery and tobacco laws. As such, ALE Special Agents target problem ABC-licensed and illegal establishments that serve as havens for violence, drugs, gang activity, organized crime, money laundering and other criminal activity.

The mission of the Alcohol Law Enforcement Division is to reduce crime and enhance public safety throughout the State of North Carolina. This mission is accomplished through the proactive, fair and consistent enforcement of the state laws related to alcoholic beverage control, gambling, tobacco, controlled substances, and nuisance abatement, as well as other criminal and regulatory matters in the interest of health and public safety.

Please be advised that the ALE Special Agent I – Statewide & ALE Special Agent I – Concord positions have posted on the OSHR jobs site this morning.  The job postings have an end date of Saturday, September 19, 2026; however, Workday will close the postings at 11:59pm on Friday, September 18, 2026.  Please share this information with anyone you know who is interested in applying for this position, and who meets all of the requirements (e.g. education, experience, KSAs).  Applicants must be BLET certified by December 31, 2026. 

Please be advised, this is two separate postings. However, candidates may apply for both positions. If they apply for both positions, they will only have to complete each step of the process one time even if they have applied for both positions. They will not have to do two (2) Webex, two (2) POPAT, etc. They will just complete one and it will count for both processes.

IMPORTANT REMINDER(S): To receive credit for your work history, education, and/or credentials, you must list ALL of the information on the State of North Carolina application including your current position. Any information omitted shall NOT be considered for qualifying credit. This relates to items such as high school, college, and certifications (e.g. BLET, Advanced/Intermediate/General Certification), as well as related prior employment. In addition, applicants seeking Veteran’s Preference must attach a DD form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, along with your application.

Also, the listed Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) associated with the position, management preference(s) along with the minimum education and experience listed, are REQUIRED in order to be deemed “eligible” for the position. This means you must provide supporting information, within the body of your application, to demonstrate your possession of each KSA listed and the management preference to be BLET certified by December 31, 2026.

Minimum Education and Experience:

•      Out of state applicants will be advised to submit proof of an equivalency check by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards at the time of their applicant package review.  Failure to do so will disqualify them.

•      NC applicants must successfully complete BLET.

•      Applicants who are not currently NC BLET certified will have to show proof of enrollment at the applicant package review.

•      All applicants must have the rule of four (Rule of Four = four year degree, two year degree and two years full time sworn experience, or four years full time sworn experience).  Sworn experience starts the date they took the oath of office, not the date they were hired with the department and began a BLET academy. Their sworn experience does not begin the first day they report to work or the academy.  The sworn experience begins on the date they are sworn in.

A Bachelor’s or Associates degree must be received no later than December 31, 2026.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Must be eligible for certification as a Law Enforcement Officer by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission. Applicants must graduate from the next available ALE Academy upon hire and meet all applicable North Carolina state statutory standards for law enforcement officers.

IMPORTANT!  Law Enforcement experience must be full-time, with full arrest authority, to be considered.  Sworn law enforcement experience is defined as having full arrest authority.  Correctional and/or Detention Officer experience does not qualify for full arrest authority, unless specifically documented.
