Residence Hall Renovations

It is an exciting time at the NCJA. We are working hard to make improvements to Residence Halls A & B on our east campus. Residence Hall C is currently under renovation and is tentatively scheduled to reopen in September 2020. Rooms are being reconfigured to maximize the use of existing space. New improvements include each bedroom having its own bathroom, new mattresses, new elevator, and efficient mechanical systems.

Our general contractor is doing a great job, and we are excited about seeing the finished project.

We are currently in the design phase for Residence Hall B and plan to begin construction by early 2021. We are designing this building in a layout similar to Residence Hall A.  We look forward to completing the final design and getting this project started.

If you have any questions about our renovation projects, please contact Gary Royal or Dana Phillips.

NCJA Website Redesign

In August, we revealed our new website design. The new bolder, cleaner look came with a few changes. We hope these changes will make life easier for everyone.

One change created was a single sign-on area for all instructors, school directors, and certified personnel to obtain lesson plans and PowerPoints for their specific areas of expertise.

In the future, we hope to initiate the “Order Books” button and connect it to our online bookstore. The bookstore is working hard on this and will have it up soon. Once the bookstore goes online, we will be able to activate the “Conceal Carry Instructor Course” button. This will allow you to pay for your Conceal Carry Instructor course online without having to get a cashier’s check for payment.
to show the new buttons for the online bookstore, conceal carry sign up and the online payment for conceal carry

If you are ever on our website and feel a little lost, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our webmaster at NCJAWebmaster@ncdoj.gov.

NCJA Leadership Institute Kicks Off this March!

The inaugural class of the NCJA Leadership Institute (NCJA-LI) begins March 23, 2020. This program is designed to equip law enforcement leaders with the mindset and principles to positively impact their agencies at the executive level. If you currently serve as an executive leader and wish to enhance your skills, this class is for you! If you are a new leader who desires to grow and develop toward executive leadership, this class is for you as well! Anyone currently serving in a supervisory capacity in law enforcement or corrections is eligible to compete for a position in this program, upon completion of all prerequisites.

leadership institute logoNCJA-LI occurs over three months, with students attending the class for one week out of each month. The first week is on the campus of NCJA at Salemburg. In the second month (Week Two), class is in Chapel Hill at the UNC School of Government (a hotel stay is required for this week). Week Three, students return to Salemburg to wrap up their studies and graduate from the program. Class dates for the first session are March 23-27, April 20-24, and May 18-22.

Prerequisites include completion of the Certified Credible Leadership Module One (CCL-1), a 12-week online course in leadership currently offered through Wake Tech, free of charge for students eligible for fee-waivers. The next offering of CCL-1 begins in January 2020. Students enrolled in the January class may compete for a position in the inaugural class. They will need to show proof of completing CCL-1 before graduation in May. Other prerequisites include the completion of an essay, which serves as part of the competitive process for entry into the program.

Those interested in attending NCJA-LI should register through the online portal no later than February 15, 2020. The class is limited to 25 students per session. It is recommended to register right away, even if prerequisites are not yet completed to indicate your intent to compete. The portal may indicate a waiting list but register anyway since attendees are selected through competition. Students may register for CCL-1 at http://icldnc.com/credible-leadership-1/. They can register for NCJA-LI by opening their account in the NCJA Student Portal. Search classes using keyword: NCJA Leadership, and select the class that begins March 23. More information regarding the overall program is available at this same location.

Any questions regarding NCJA-LI may be directed to the course coordinator, Kevin Tingen, at 910-525-4158, ext. 230.

Online Course Completion & Printing Your Certificate

As the end of the year is approaching, many of you are completing your in-service online. In order for your courses to record as complete, so you can print your certificate, you need to use the latest version of Google Chrome. Also, if you have completed your courses, but they are still showing as “in-progress” on your account, you need to open the courses in the latest version of Google Chrome. Please follow these directions:

To make sure you have the latest version of Google Chrome:

  • Click on the three vertical dots located on the right side of the toolbar.
  • Hover over “Help.”
  • Choose “About Google Chrome.”
  • Google Chrome will then update to the latest version. Click on “Relaunch” if the button appears.

After updating Chrome, open the NCJA Training Portal in a new tab and sign in. Launch or continue your course.  Click on the play course button on the initial slide. When you get to the last slide, click on the “Close Course” button.

Your course should now show as complete and you can print your certificate. You can find your certificate in the certification section of your NCJA portal account.

If you have any questions, please contact Alice Butler at 910-525-4158 x246 or Kristi Jernigan 910-525-4158 x351.

Personnel Changes/New Faces at the Academy

Mrs. Merrily Cheek was recently selected to serve as the In-Service Training Coordinator. She will coordinate the development of annual in-service projects.  Her experience, education, and attention to detail will certainly prove beneficial to serving in this new role.  She replaces Mr. Bill Dubois, who after many years of valuable service to our law enforcement community, retired last year.

Danielle Zecher has joined the Academy at our Edneyville campus. She comes to us from the Public Defender’s Office for the Judicial District 29B in the Henderson County Office where she spent the last ten years working as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant.  She graduated from Greenville Technical College in Greenville, SC with an Associate Degree in Public Service. We look forward to her serving as our Quality Assurance/Research assistant for the West Campus.
