The primary purpose of the Special Agent is to perform duties as a law enforcement officer working in the Criminal Investigations and Employee Classification Division. The Special Agent works in accordance with Chapter 97 of the Workers’ Compensation Act. The Special Agent will identify, collect, analyze, and preserve evidence of workers’ compensation crimes employing law enforcement skills, with a focus to deter and detect violations. Work involves responding to and investigating complaints or calls, detecting violations, collection and preservation of evidence, testimony in court proceedings as necessary, and performing related work. During the course of an investigation, the Special Agent may examine or assist with the examination of various insurance documents and records, as well as non-insurance documents and records. These documents may be in written and/or electronic form. Additionally, the Special Agent may interview and interrogate related subjects identified during the course of the investigation. It is essential that the Special Agent maintain a current working knowledge of criminal statutes, the laws of arrest, search and seizure, and all procedural legislative acts that directly apply to conducting criminal investigations.

 

This position will have jurisdiction within the State of North Carolina and will primarily investigate cases in the Western Piedmont region that covers from Ashe County to Union County.
