The City of Mount Airy is accepting applications for a Community Police Officer.  An employee in this class serves as a liaison between the police department and the Community.  The employee will provide decentralized, personalized police service to the community.  The administrative and educational role incorporates conducting a variety of programs to the communities, religious groups, civic organizations, and city schools.  This employee will encompass a variety of philosophical and practical approaches to providing long term solutions.  The employee must be culturally aware of the attitudes, beliefs, motivations, and value systems of the community for the purpose of interacting and interfacing with groups of individuals to produce positive outcomes through problem solving.  Through the partnership with community leaders, search for more effective ways to promote public safety and to enhance the quality of life in their neighborhoods.  Work is performed by means of riding a bicycle; weather permitted and requires minimum supervision.  Work requires application of modern law enforcement techniques, second judgment, and independent initiatives.  Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy, state and federal laws, supplemented with specific directions from superior officers.  The employee also performs patrol functions as directed by the patrol supervisor.  The employee depending upon role is subject to hazards associated with law enforcement including working both inside and outside environments, in extreme cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as exposure to atmospheric conditions, noise, vibration, and physical conditions.  Work also requires frequent contact with the public, which requires tact, firmness, and decisiveness.  Starting salary for this position is 47,500/annually.

Education and Experience:

Completion of an approved Community Oriented Policy training program.  A minimum of two (2) years of experience in law enforcement.

Special Requirement:

Possession of a valid driver’s license
Completed the minimum requirements established by the North Carolina Justice Training Standards Council for certified law enforcement officers
