Position Summary:

The Town of Warrenton is seeking applications for an experienced law enforcement professional to serve as the Chief of Police. The Police Chief will lead and manage all operations for a department comprised of the chief, four full-time, and auxiliary officers. The role includes performing administrative, and management duties while also performing patrol and investigative work. The current Chief is retiring after thirteen years in the role. The projected start date for the position is July 1, 2024. Salary Range:

 $65,176 to $81,470

Primary Duties:

  • Direct and supervise all department personnel and resources; assign, supervise, evaluate, and discipline personnel.
  • Monitors and reviews daily operations to ensure conformity with department goals and community interests.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Thorough knowledge of law enforcement administration, corrections practices, and criminal justice systems process.
  • Thorough knowledge of civil and criminal
  • Thorough knowledge of department and town policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of law enforcement planning and
  • Considerable knowledge of management and supervisory principles and
  • Considerable knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to release of law enforcement and investigation records.
  • Considerable knowledge of the current trends and developments in the field of law
  • Ability to use common office equipment including word processing, spreadsheet, and file maintenance programs.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completing a degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
  • Possession of Basic Law Enforcement Certification from NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission,
  • Ability to pass a medical, psychological, and drug
  • Ability to work a twelve-hour
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the department to direct and coordinate work within the department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of law enforcement experience.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
