Basic Narcotics Investigator

Who Should Attend:

An investigator beginning a career as a Narcotics/VICE investigator or any officer pursuing a career as Narcotics/VICE investigator. This course is for sworn law enforcement officers only.

Course Goal:

This 32-hour course combines both lecture and practical exercises.  The course is broken up into (6) main categories: 
  • Informants
  • Asset Forfeiture
  • Undercover
  • Intelligence
  • Evidence and Operational Planning.
The student will have class discussion and lecture on each subject as well as daily practical exercises that will allow the officer to gather hands-on experience.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this block of instruction the student will be able to:

  • Properly handle confidential informants.
  • Correctly conduct surveillance.
  • Properly handle and package evidence.
  • Confidently conduct undercover operations.
  • Understand at a basic level asset forfeiture.
  • Effectively coordinate an operational plan.


This course employs lecture, class discussion, and practical exercises.

Course Requirements:

Attendance is required at all class sessions. A written examination will be given at the conclusion of training and participants must obtain a minimum score of 70% to successfully complete the course. Course will begin at 8:00am each morning unless modified by the instructor.

Special Concerns:
This program is hosted by the NC Justice Academy. The course will focus around basic narcotics investigations, dealing with informants and asset forfeiture. Students are requested to bring an unmarked vehicle, binoculars, civilian clothes, some type of camera for practical exercises.
