Instructor Training

Instructor Training is required for all instructors who conduct training that is mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.

The North Carolina Justice Academy developed the Instructor Training Course in 1975. The course was originally designed to prepare criminal justice practitioners to teach criminal justice-related material to students entering the profession. Since then, this course has evolved and currently prepares instructors to teach basic officers (students) and in-service populations.

This course is required for all instructors who conduct training that is mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission. Some of these courses include Basic Law Enforcement Training, DOCC Basic Training, General Instructor Training, RADAR, and all Specialized Instructor Courses taught to supplement BLET and In-Service.

Annual Instructor Training Update

Effective January 1, 2017, General Instructors will no longer be required to deliver 12 hours of instruction every 3 years to maintain certification. In addition, General Instructor certification will no longer have an expiration date, provided that each instructor completes a one-hour online update training course administered annually by the NC Justice Academy.
