New Sergeants' Course

Who Should Attend:

Those who have been promoted within the past year and those who anticipate being promoted.

Course Goals:

To provide the knowledge and skills to assist the newly promoted officer in making the transition to first line supervisor.

Course Objectives:

The student will be able to:

♦ Prepare a personal mission statement.
♦ Explain how emotional intelligence is a key to effective leadership.
♦ Recognize their own level of emotional intelligence.
♦ Describe the guidelines that a new supervisor should follow.
♦ Recognize the common challenges that face the first line supervisor.
♦ Describe common pitfalls that face the newly promoted supervisor and how to avoid them.
♦ Identify the basic leadership styles.
♦ Determine the appropriate leadership style to apply to a given situation.
♦ Recognize their own leadership style preference.
♦ Describe how to handle the employee disciplinary process.
♦ Determine how to analyze a performance deficiency. 


This course employs lecture, discussion, diagnostic instruments, practical exercises, and case studies.

Course Requirements:

Attendance is required at all sessions. Students will be required to prepare and present a personal mission statement.

Special Concerns:
Some out-of-class work is required.
