LIDAR Instructor Recertification

Who Should Attend:

LIDAR instructors seeking recertification under NCAC 9B.0239. Individuals must have successfully completed the RADAR Instructor Recertification course prior to entering LIDAR Instructor Recertification.  

Course Goal:

To improve the effectiveness or speed enforcement through the proper and efficient use of LIDAR speed measurement instruments. To maintain and enhance the knowledge and skills necessary to instruct the LIDAR Operator Training course.  

Course Objectives:


The student will be able to:
► Demonstrate basic skills in testing and operating of all LIDAR instruments in accordance with criteria specified on a standardized performance evaluation form.

► Identify specific LIDAR instruments and describe their major components and features.

► Identify laws, court rulings, regulations, policies, and procedures affecting LIDAR speed measurement and speed enforcement.

►  Teach students in the performance of the objectives listed above.



This course employs lecture, demonstration and field practice.  

Course Requirements:

Attendance is required at all class sessions. Performance of 100% proficiency is required in all motor-skill testing areas. Upon course completion, students must attain a minimum of 75% on a Commission-administered final written examination prior to being recertified as a LIDAR Instructor. 
There will be an assortment of motor-skills testing throughout the training course for which the student must successfully complete before graduation from the training is permitted. 

Special Concerns:

Students must provide a LIDAR instrument for testing and practical exercises. Class will begin at 8:00 a.m.


  1. Register for ALL NCJA classes (online, traditional, web-based) on our North Carolina Justice Academy Training Portal. After signing in to the portal, you can view ALL available classes. If you don’t have a portal account, instructions for creating one are located here.
  2. Also, you must complete the Written Endorsement to Attend Specialized Instructor or SMI Training form and return it to the appropriate program assistant indicated on the Training Portal.
