Who Should Attend:

Employees of communication centers/telecommunicators

Course Goal:

To educate the student about Latino culture and proper pronunciation of Spanish words and phrases which will assist the telecommunicator when receiving calls from Latino persons with little or no English language skills.

Course Objectives:

The student will be able to:
♦ Communicate orally with specific Spanish words and phrases which may present themselves in common telephone conversations at the communications center.
♦ Describe in writing the major characteristics of Latin culture.

Methodologies:

This course employs lecture, discussion, repetition, and skill practice.

Course Requirements:

Attendance is required at all class sessions. Students are expected to participate in classroom discussions and skill practices. Students must obtain a score of 70% on a written examination.

Special Concerns:

This course is designed to familiarize the student with basic Spanish words, phrases, street/slang Spanish, cultural information, and information specific to the detention center. After this introductory course, the student should continue self-study to enhance his/her knowledge of the Spanish language.
