Position: Chief of Police
Location: Hertford, NC
Salary: $42,516—$62,923
Duties: • Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement and crime prevention principles and practices • Thorough knowledge of the statutes, laws, and ordinances which pertain to law enforcement •Thorough knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the town, or ability to gain the same • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports analyzing departmental operations • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with varied audiences • Ability to effectively supervise and evaluate the work of staff, and to motivate, communicate, counsel, and otherwise establish high morale and productivity • Ability to exercise sound judgment and react effectively in emergency situations • Ability to maintain good physical condition • Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with the public • Ability to prepare departmental budget and provide fiscal analysis and justification of proposals • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town officials, co-workers, other law enforcement agencies, and the general public • Ability to gather, interpret, and explain technical and statistical information • Skill in the use of firearms
Requirements: Candidates for the position are required to have at least ten years of strong technical and command or supervisory level experience in a law enforcement agency. Other requirements include: a strong commitment to community-oriented policing; excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills; the ability to relate to elected officials, Town staff, citizens, and other law enforcement officials; thorough knowledge of federal, state, and municipal ordinances related to law enforcement. A bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Public or Business Administration, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and/ or experience will be considered. Advanced training through the Southern Police Institute or the FBI National Academy is a plus, as is possession of an Advanced Law Enforcement certificate issued by the State of North Carolina. Must meet and maintain minimum training and experience requirements for the position as established by the department and the State of North Carolina. Must be certified as a law enforcement officer in the State of North Carolina by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission.
