Executive Leadership for New Chiefs

Who Should Attend:

This course is intended primarily for police chiefs with less than three (3) years of experience as a chief. This course is also appropriate for higher level command staff aspiring to become an agency head, in the role of a chief.

Course Goal:

This focus of this course is to enhance the skills, knowledge and abilities of executives in command staff or agency head positions.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
 
  • Identify and describe different leadership models.
  • Describe important liability issues with regard to employment, supervision, training, managing critical incidents, and evidence retention.
  • Determine and articulate manpower needs for their agency.
  • Understand and apply the use of statistical data to include; calls for service and the Crime Measurement Index (CMI).
  • Develop an agency budget.
  • Demonstrate the skills necessary to effectively interact with the media.
  • Apply effective strategies for conducting a formal press conference.

Methodologies:

The course employs lecture, discussion, demonstration and practical exercises.

Course Requirements:

Students should be familiar with Microsoft program applications including a basic understanding of Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Some evening course work will be required.

Special Concerns:

The course will be offered over a four (4) month period. Classes will meet the second week of the month, Tuesdays through Thursdays. The final class session will be extended to Friday at noon, for a graduation ceremony.
