Child Forensic Interviewing: Introduction to the RADAR Interviewing Protocol

Who Should Attend:

Law enforcement officers, beginning as well as experienced child forensic interviewers, mental health professionals including psychologists, DSS Child Protective Service workers, therapists, case managers, child advocacy professionals and other professionals who wish to improve their skills in interviewing.

Course Goal:

This four-day, child forensic interviewing course provides an introduction to the RADAR interview protocol.  RADAR (Recognizing Abuse Disclosure types and Responding) is a research-based, best practices protocol for interviewing children (5 years and older) and adolescents who are being assessed for possible sexual or physical abuse.  The course includes hands-on role-play practice as well as a required reading assignment of three articles.  RADAR is structured to ensure interview quality and ease of learning, while offering enough flexibility to be effective with children of differing ages.

1. Describe how to use the RADAR interview protocol in interviewing children about sexual and physical abuse.
2. Develop a familiarity with the RADAR protocol through hands-on role play practice.
3. Apply RADAR interviewing concepts during practice interviews scheduled on day two and day three of the course.

Methodologies:

This course will employ lecture, demonstrations, discussion and conference methods along with practice interviews.

Course Requirements:

Attendance at all class sessions is required as well as completion of all assignments and practice interviews.
