Background Investigations

Who Should Attend:

Those assigned and responsible to conduct pre-­employment background investigations of new employees.

Course Goals:

To provide law enforcement professionals responsible for conducting background investigations the information needed to successfully perform the investigation.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this block of instruction, the student will be able to achieve the following objectives in accordance with information received during the instructional period when conducting an applicant investigation: 

 - Apply the job requirements as required by North Carolina Training and Standards Commission or North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.
 - Conduct background-related interviews utilizing questions which will elicit accurate information regarding persons applying for law enforcement positions.
 - In order to effectively hire qualified individuals into the law enforcement profession and to avoid violating employment related laws, recognize various laws and legal issues pertaining to employment background investigations.
 - Utilize appropriate sources of information to verify or develop information regarding applicants.
 - Discuss the psychological dimension relating to the background investigations, including a discussion of the battery of psychological testing given to applicants as well as red flags to be aware relating to applicant psychological suitability for a law enforcement position.
 - Discuss the ramifications to an agency as a result of an improper background investigation or the withholding of information on an applicant to another agency.
 - Demonstrate during a practical exercise the ability to collect accurate information and present the findings about a particular applicant.


This course employs lecture, class discussion, an in-depth practical exercise (students will conduct an actual background investigation to be turned in at the end of the week).

Course Requirements:

Attendance is required at all class sessions.
